Lazarus Kgagudi

Lazarus Kgagudi was an excellent singer and collaborated extensively with Emil Zoghby, his executive producer, and Craig Beyrooti, recording engineer and producer.  Emil and Craig owned 8th Avenue Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa where they recorded and produced many of Lazaurs Kgagudi's albums.  Albums Lazarus recorded at 8th Avenue include Lazarus Kgagudi (Platinum Record), Don’t Hold Her Ruff, If You Don’t Know Me (Gold Record), Lazarus Kgagudi 3 (Double Platinum Record), and Careless Mistakes.  He collaborated on all of these records with Emil Zoghby, Craig Beyrooti, Kevin Manas, Phiri Motale and the band Step Ahead.  Lazi not only wrote many of his own songs but also produced other artists that recorded at 8th Avenue including Max Masuluke, Willie Mohlala, Eric D, and Sigaman.  Despite losing his sight as child due to a bicycle accident, he never let it prevent him from achieving his musical ambitions.  Known as “The Silver Fox”, he was a household name in the 80’s and 90’s in South Africa.

Sadly, Lazarus died in 1995.   He was posthumously honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 at the Golden Oldies Music Festival in Polokwane.  Lazi’s legacy continues through his music and the generations he has mentored and inspired.
